Revision surgery corrects something that still bothers you after a previous top surgery. Most first operations achieve a good result, but small irregularities are common, and some can only be corrected once the chest has fully healed. Dr. Hakki Izmirli performs revision surgery in Istanbul for international patients, including those whose first operation was performed by another surgeon.
| Problem | Typical correction |
|---|---|
| Dog ears | Excision of the extra skin and fat, extending the scar slightly |
| Residual fullness | Removal of remaining tissue and/or liposuction |
| Asymmetry | Contouring the fuller side to match the other |
| Wide or raised scars | Scar revision; raised scars are often treated non-surgically first |
| Nipple size or position | Reducing, repositioning or re-grafting the nipples |
| Skin excess after keyhole or periareolar | Conversion to a technique that allows skin removal, such as double incision |
A scar revision replaces one scar with a new, ideally finer one; it cannot remove a scar completely. Dr. Izmirli will tell you honestly what can and cannot be improved.
The chest keeps changing for months as swelling goes down and scars mature, and some irregularities improve on their own. Revision is therefore usually planned once the tissues have settled, at least 9 to 12 months after your first operation. If you are unsure, send photos; it is often possible to tell early on whether something will settle or will need correction.
The operation depends on what needs to be corrected. Smaller corrections such as dog ears or a scar revision can often be done under local anaesthesia, while more extensive revisions are performed under general anaesthesia. Where possible, Dr. Izmirli uses your existing scars so that no new scars are added.
Recovery after revision is usually shorter than after the first operation. You stay one night in hospital and six nights in Istanbul in total for check-ups. You may need to wear a compression binder again, and your aftercare continues remotely once you are home.
Revision surgery carries the same types of risks as the first operation: bleeding or haematoma, fluid collection (seroma), infection, wound-healing problems, scarring, and changes in sensation. Operating on tissue that has already been operated on can be more complex, and in some cases the result cannot be fully corrected. Dr. Izmirli discusses your individual risks at your consultation.
Send us clear photos of your chest from the front and both sides, and, if possible, details of your first operation: the technique used, when it was performed, and any complications. Dr. Izmirli will review them and tell you what can realistically be improved before you make any travel plans.
